Web3 CPA for the Digital Asset Compliance Era

Camuso CPA provides specialized accounting and tax services for Web3 operating companies, blockchain protocols, token projects, and venture-backed startups. Since founding the firm in 2016, we have worked directly with digital asset businesses to address complex financial reporting, accounting, and tax matters. We advise founders and finance teams on establishing accounting systems, structuring and analyzing token transactions, reconstructing historical books, preparing tax filings, and managing ongoing financial reporting and compliance obligations.

Web3 businesses face accounting and tax questions that require a detailed understanding of their operations, technology, and underlying contractual arrangements. Blockchain records may establish when assets moved without explaining the economic purpose of a transaction. Token issuances and allocations, staking and protocol revenue, treasury activity across decentralized finance platforms, contributor compensation, and transactions between related entities all require careful analysis. The accounting and tax treatment depends on the specific facts, contractual rights, and applicable rules. Decisions made early in a company’s development can affect years of financial statements, tax filings, investor reporting, and future transactions.

Our engagements support businesses at different stages of development. We advise startups establishing their initial entity, accounting, and tax infrastructure; companies preparing for financing rounds, token launches, or major transactions; and established businesses that need to correct historical books or improve their financial reporting. Our accounting work includes developing policies, reconciling on-chain activity, integrating digital asset subledgers with general ledgers, and maintaining reliable financial records. Our tax services cover transaction analysis, planning, federal and multi-state compliance, and complex entity considerations. Clients can engage us for accounting, tax advisory, or integrated ongoing services based on their needs.

Patrick Camuso’s research on digital asset taxation has been published in Tax Notes, including work co-authored with a former head of the IRS Office of Digital Assets and co-author of the Section 6045 digital asset broker regulations. His expertise and commentary have also appeared in Bloomberg Tax, Accounting Today, Business Insider, MarketWatch, Morningstar, and other major publications. He has spoken at ETHDenver and other industry conferences on digital asset accounting, taxation, and the evolving compliance requirements facing the industry.

Our Process: From Entity Assessment To Ongoing Advisory

Step 1: Entity Assessment & Exposure Review

This assessment reviews entity structure, token activity, existing books, and prior filings to identify gaps and exposure across both accounting and tax. Where decisions remain open, such as a pending token event or an unexecuted structural arrangement, those are flagged first. Engagement scope and methodology are defined at this stage.

Step 2: Accounting Systems & Historical Records

Where accounting support is needed, we establish policies for token, treasury, protocol, and other digital asset activity; develop an appropriate chart of accounts; and integrate a digital asset subledger with the company's general ledger. For businesses with existing accounting problems, we reconstruct and reconcile historical activity before establishing ongoing reporting.

Step 3: Tax Analysis, Planning & Compliance

We evaluate the federal and applicable state tax treatment of token events, compensation, protocol revenue, treasury transactions, and entity arrangements. Engagements may include written tax-position analysis, planning before significant transactions, current-year returns, and corrections to earlier filings. Tax advisory can be provided independently or alongside accounting services.

Step 4: Ongoing Advisory & Proactive Compliance

Forward-looking advisory addresses entity structure, token event positioning, cross-border and multi-entity arrangements, and the accounting and tax implications of decisions before they are made. Ongoing engagements include monthly or quarterly close, tax projections, and provisions on the cadence the business requires.

Why Web3 Businesses Work With Camuso CPA

Web3 accounting and taxation require an understanding of both the underlying transactions and the business arrangements they represent. Wallet records alone may not establish whether a transfer relates to revenue, compensation, financing, a treasury movement, or another economic event.

Camuso CPA combines experience in cryptocurrency accounting and federal taxation with direct work on Web3 company books, digital asset subledgers, token arrangements, and complex business reporting. We have helped businesses reconstruct historical records, develop accounting policies, correct financial statements, and establish ongoing accounting processes.

Patrick Camuso’s published research on digital asset taxation and involvement in professional tax discussions also informs our approach to documenting complex tax matters. Our engagements are designed around the company’s actual accounting and reporting needs.

Complex Token Activity? Historical Accounting Problems? Web3 Tax Questions?

Web3 CPA FAQ

What is a Web3 CPA and why does my company need one instead of a general accountant?

A Web3 CPA provides accounting and tax services for businesses operating with digital assets, token-based arrangements, and blockchain transactions. The work may involve on-chain reconciliation, financial reporting, token compensation, protocol revenue, entity taxation, and complex treasury activity. These matters often require specialist analysis beyond what ordinary bookkeeping records or crypto tax software can establish.

What types of Web3 companies does Camuso CPA work with?

We serve Web3 operating companies, venture-backed startups, protocol teams, token projects, DeFi businesses, and digital asset marketplaces. Our work includes establishing accounting systems, correcting historical records, evaluating token and entity tax matters, and providing ongoing accounting and compliance support.

Do you handle both accounting and tax, or just one?

Both. Clients may engage us for accounting, tax analysis, compliance, or a combination. A company may need historical books rebuilt before preparing its returns, while another may already have reliable financial records but need advice on a proposed token issuance or entity transaction. We establish the engagement around the work actually required. Explore our Web3 accounting services and Web3 tax services.

When should a Web3 company engage a CPA?

Ideally before significant financial or tax decisions such as entity formation, a token issuance, a financing transaction, or the establishment of cross-border operations. Companies with existing activity should seek advice when accounting records are unreliable, reporting obligations are approaching, or transaction structures require technical analysis.

Can you rebuild books and correct filings that were done incorrectly?

Yes. We assist Web3 companies with historical bookkeeping corrections, digital asset reconciliation, incomplete financial records, and prior-year tax matters. The work begins with assessing the existing records, identifying material discrepancies, and determining what reconstruction or corrective filings are appropriate.

What accounting software do Web3 companies need?

Many Web3 businesses need a digital asset subledger alongside their general ledger. The appropriate system depends on the blockchains, wallets, exchanges, transaction types, and reporting requirements involved. We assess the available records and accounting needs before recommending an implementation or integration approach.

How do you handle token launches and team allocations?

We evaluate the underlying agreements, rights, issuance mechanics, vesting arrangements, compensation terms, and relevant entity structure. Token launches, SAFTs, team allocations, and related arrangements may raise different accounting and federal tax questions. We document the applicable analysis and coordinate with legal counsel where necessary.

What if our company has foreign founders or multiple entities?

We assist with U.S. tax and accounting matters involving foreign ownership, related entities, international operations, and cross-border transactions. Depending on the circumstances, relevant issues may include federal information reporting, intercompany arrangements, transfer pricing, withholding, and entity classification. Foreign jurisdiction-specific advice may require coordination with local professionals.

Can you prepare our company for investor diligence or an audit?

We help businesses improve the reliability and documentation of their accounting records, reconcile digital asset activity, and address material reporting issues. This can support financing, due diligence, and independent audits. Our accounting and advisory services are distinct from an independent audit or assurance engagement.

Why should we choose Camuso CPA for Web3 accounting and tax?
